Book of the Day: A Touch of Poison [August 29-October 19]
"Gwenwyn is the most miserable princess ever, and for good reason. Merely brushing up against her or touching her exposed skin is enough to cause painful burns, or worse. And if that wasn't enough, she's just discovered the singular reason for her existence - to act as the king's secret assassin, murdering neighboring princes with nothing more than a simple kiss . . ." - Wattpad description
Hello, and welcome back to Better Books! Today we have another amazing Fantasy tale, despite mostly favoring Science Fiction as my preferred genre.
So, that's right, folks! Today we have Wattpad member ironkite's A Touch of Poison as our Book of the Day!
Now, originally seeing it in the listings I thought it looked "interesting." So I thought, "Why don't I try it out?" (I'd already learned that awesome books don't always have a neon sign saying, "THIS BOOK IS AWESOME")
Anyway, this book was amazing. With it's quick pace, detailed descriptions, and just simply well-done plot, it's a sure winner.
There's really no way to ignore the humor, fun, and enchanting adventure in this fast-paced Fantasy story - one that will capture the full attention of its audiences for years - or more - to come.
Read what Aaron Kite, the author, has to say about himself and his amazing book in our short interview:
Better Books: Where did the idea for A Touch of Poison come from?
Aaron: I used to suffer from haphephobia, or a fear of being touched, so there's a little of that in there. Plus, I read something in a Terry Goodkind novel that sort of hinted at the idea of someone being poisonous because of something they ate on a regular basis, and I went 'Hmmmm.'
Better Books: What do you like most about writing A Touch of Poison?
Aaron: I loves me some cliffhangers. Mostly though, it's all been about the reaction I've gotten to it. I've read every comment I've gotten on that story, and am grateful for the reaction it's gotten.
Better Books: Who is your favourite character, if you have one?
Aaron: I can't even say I have a favorite character in this one, although Anifail is rather delightfully snide and smarmy in places. That's always fun to write, even if I hate him for it. :)
Better Books: Now that the book is finished, do you have any plans for the future?
Aaron: There are plans in motion, though I cannot mention any of them unfortunately. Suffice it to say, the book will hopefully be doing something very interesting within the next year or two . . .
Something interesting? Ooh, sounds awesome! We're hoping for a sequel but publishing would be awesome too! Thanks, Aaron!
By now, you're probably going to want to check out the book - but to cement your decision, take a look at what the readers are saying:
"Usually i'm not that fond of fantasy, but this is sooo good!" - Bwexan
"This is absolutely phenomenal. It's so refreshing to find a well-written story with an original plot!!!" - Clatogirl12
There's more, too!
So, you ready to read? Awesome! And don't forget to check out ironkite on his Wattpad profile!

Book of the Day: Second Nature [August 26-28, 2012]
"A ROMANTIC THRILLER. The story of Gen, a young woman who escapes a bio-warfare research lab carrying in her body billions of tiny organisms engineered from parts of her own cells. These microscopic entities empower her with wonderful and terrifying abilities as they compel her to complete a journey to fulfill their own destiny. As Gen seeks to learn where her superhuman gifts are taking her, she discovers what it is to be a very human woman in love." - Wattpad Description
Wow. Really, when I started this book, I wasn't expecting what I'd get. Funnily enough, this is a pattern - shown by three straight Books of the Day, three straight unexpected awesome reads. And they're my only three reviews so far. Maybe it's showing that I'm a little too picky, but whatever.
Anyway.
This book, claimed in it's Wattpad description to be "A ROMANTIC THRILLER," did not disappoint. In fact, I think it raised the bar for Science Fiction / Romance stories everywhere.
This was utterly amazing. It was well-written, and even though Mark Canter incorporated lots of that science-y stuff that would have most people dazed and confused, it all made sense. The flow was perfect!
What I loved most might be the way the story is one continuous adventure. There are no points when you don't feel like turning the page, no moment to put it down and go to the washroom for a break. The entire story was wrapped around a great, intricately woven plot.
Here's what Canter said in answer to our questions about him and Second Nature:
Better Books: Where did the idea for Second Nature come from?
Mark Canter: "The idea for Second Nature came from an award-winning short story that became an award-winning novel: "Blood Music" by the physicist Greg Bear. [Amazon]
"I then read a book "Engines of Creation" by the scientist who coined the word "nanotech"--Eric Drexler. [Amazon]
"The science in my novel about mitochondria (they have their own unique DNA, different than the nuclear DNA, an passed on by the mother, not the father) is authentic. I also read a book by the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, Francis Crick, about his theory that life was INTENTIONALLY seeded on earth, by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization. [Amazon]"
Better Books: What do you like most about writing Second Nature?
Mark Canter: What did I like most about writing Second Nature? Imagining and developing the romantic relationship between Gen and Cade, and also the fun of having her being able to morph into anything she touched.
Better Books: Who is your favourite character, if you have one?
Mark Canter: My favorite character was Gen. I would LOVE to be able to change into different critters.
Better Books: Now that the book is finished and published on Amazon, do you have any plans for the future considering a sequel, future novels, or paperback publishing?
Mark Canter: I have no plans for writing a sequel to Second Nature, but I am working on a new novel now, which is my first historical fiction. It tells the tale of a first century Roman centurion.
Sounds great, Mark! Can't wait to see more of your works! And thanks!
If we don't have your attention yet, read what other people are saying about Second Nature:
"The characters are so real, I was completely engrossed in the book. I wasn't able to put it down!" - phylicia23
"I couldn't put this book down. It is sci-fi at its best. Totally understandable, while still taking your mind on a journey of life and how it could have been created. This story activates the imagination with sci fi, romance, and a thriller all wrapped up in one." - Robin Ruben
So, check out Mark Canter:
That good enough for you? Great! We encourage you to check out this amazing Science Fiction / Romance story - you won't be disappointed!

Book of the Day: Paladin (August 24-25, 2012)
We are back yet again with another awesome book of the day!
The book Paladin is an amazing Fantasy tale by SallySlater, another citizen of the widely known e-book community - Wattpad!
Originally, I hadn't thought much of the book. I had seen it around, but for some reason I thought it was about horses (Long story, don't ask). When I finally, begrudgingly, took a look (A glance) at the first chapter, it sucked me in. And really, that's how you can tell it's a good book. When you've got a negative opinion of something, judging a book by its cover, usually - even if it's good - you won't like it as much as if you had a good opinion.
This book?
It literally grabbed my forced me to continue reading. Not that I wanted to stop. It was amazing.
Still want to hear more? Read what SallySlater has to say about her amazing book:
Q: Where did the idea for Paladin come from?
A: I've always been drawn to stories with strong female heroines - both psychologically and physically, but those characters are few and far between in high fantasy--which happens to be my favorite genre. So I decided to write one myself. Add a little gender bending fun, some swordplay and a bit of gore, and voila, you've got Paladin.
Q: What do you like most about writing Paladin?
A: It doesn't ALWAYS happen when I write, but I love the feeling of being "in the zone" - the plot unfolds in my head like a movie, and the words just flow. Like reading a book, writing is a temporary escape from reality--except I get to create the world that I escape to. And it's pretty exciting to be able to capture my imagination on the page, and have readers embrace my imagination and my story when they read my work.
Q: Who is your favourite character, if you have one?
A: In Paladin, my favorite character is Sam, probably because I relate to her the most, and I also really wouldn't mind trading places with her. She's a badass with a sword and she gets to hang out with two good looking men all the time. She's not perfect - she's a bit spoiled, and a bit naive, but on the whole, I think she's got a strength and resilience that makes her really appealing.
Thanks, SallySlater!
"Lady Samantha "Sam" Haywood has long dreamed of joining the ranks of the Paladins, the kingdom’s sole defenders against the plague of demons that has ravaged the countryside for centuries. But as the daughter of a duke, her future lies elsewhere. Refusing to accept this fate, Sam disguises herself as a boy and trains in secret, until she earns a coveted spot on the Paladins’ roster of all-male trainees.
"Accompanied by her mentor Paladin Tristan Lyons and Braeden - a Paladin trainee like Sam, and a half-demon - she sets out on what's supposed to be a straightforward clean-up mission that proves to be far more complicated than anyone ever anticipated. Caught up in a deadly play for power, Sam must face a rebellion that threatens a centuries-long world order, and of course, hordes of demons, while hiding her true gender. An epic tale of adventure, bravery and romance." - Paladin's Description
You still need more proof? Read what others are saying about Paladin:
"hooked on the first page! this is so exciting already!" - xscarlitangelx
"I love this story!" - pouleka
And there's more, too!
So really, I highly suggest you check this adventure/Fantasy book out - I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Book of the Day: Psych Investigation Episodes: Episode One (August 22, 2012)
Congratulations to the inspiration of this website as well as our first book of the day! Psych Investigation Episodes is a highly original blend of adventure and humor!
This Science Fiction and Fantasy sensation by Kevin Weinberg, known on Wattpad as Parogar, is a sure winner! With suspense, action, adventure, and always well-placed humour, we can assure you that this kindle and paperback book will not disappoint!
We only have one caution that readers might want to be aware of. If you're allergic to laughing, stay away from this book. I nearly dropped my iPod in a fit of barely restrained laughter. The suspense is also dangerous. But of course, this book has made use of so many elements so fluently it's a wonder Parogar wasn't published months ago!
The characters are so real, and vivid, that you just can't help but imagine yourself in the story, talking to them, or even creating new elements of plot yourself.
All in all, this is a brilliant work of artistic writing that we know will do great in the world of e-book and paperbacks.
It originated on Wattpad, where we followed it, but it was first published in e-book form today! And for a limited time only, you can puchase it for ONLY $0.99 on Amazon! The paperback version will follow soon.

"PSYCHIC KILLERS DON'T STAND A CHANCE AGAINST STUPIDITY!
Jack Harris only cares about two things—television and popcorn.
He thought his worst worry was failing math, but when a string of gruesome murders occur, Jack becomes the prime suspect.
A team of investigators are on his tail, and a group of murderers want him to join them. If that wasn't bad enough, the hottest girl in school just agreed to tutor him, and his mother wants to meet her!
If Jack can survive the first date, he vows to finish his homework next time—as long as it doesn't clash with his TV guide." - Description of Psych Investigation Episodes: Episode One
